(Cape Coast, Ghana)

Hailing from Cape Coast, Ghana (Africa) Paapa Wastik has had a rich history growing up with music all around him since he was a small child. During his teen years he found Rasta and went on in the early 2000s to create a brand new musical sub genre in Ghana known as "Roots-Life Music", a fusion of reggae, soca, soul, highlife and African classical/traditional music. In 2003 Paapa Wastik was invited to perform at the annual "Panafest", an internationally acclaimed Pan-African Festival. Within the same year the international reggae production group "Greenlion Sounds" teamed up with Paapa Wastik to produce some songs, which was featured on "Greenlion in Ghana" CD mix. Making progressive steps in his talent and music mission, Paapa Wastik crossed over to the United States where he established an independent record label, Asaase Music Foundation.

For the past ten years Paapa Wastik has been traveling in between Ghana, Africa, Jamaica and the United States producing and performing alongside various artists some of which include: Anthony B, Lutan Fyah, Capleton, Tony Rebel, Queen Ifrica, Warrior King and many more.

Notable appearances include Paapa Wastik's headlining appearance at the Northwest Reggae Festival in Eugene, Oregon and another unforgettable appearance at Victoria's 8th Annual Ska Festival at Market Square alongside Mexico's Los Rastrillos, Jamaica's The Itals, The Drastics and the now defunct Arbutus Trio.

Now Paapa Wastik and the African Foundation Band have a new album called "Unity for Africa" His appearance after a five year absence from Canada is in support of this album.

Gangsta Blues, Tanya’s fifth CD (VP Records), is raw, rebellious, and authentic, confirming her position at the top of the dancehall game with a vivid display of her wide-ranging musical imagination and keen wordplay. Whether spouting hardcore racy rhymes, insightful political statements, or crooning heart-tugging romantic fables, only gutsy power bolts come from the throat of this giant talent. Massline Media's Common Market Confirmed for the First Time in Victoria BC!
Fri. October 10th 2008 10:30pm - 2am doors at 10pm
Common Market, Pocket Kings, CFC, DJ SPEEDY SHOES at Lucky Bar

Massline Media's COMMON MARKET are one of the best kept secrets in the Northwest... They are without a doubt one of the most conscious and entertaining underground hip hop groups to hit the Island in some time. They came together in 2005 (Sabzi and RA Scion) from similar backgrounds in their spiritual approach to their music. Sabzi is one-half of the groundbreaking Blue Scholars (who are opening for Hieroglyhpics later this month) and Scion was a well-travelled solo emcee. After collaborating on a couple tracks on RA Scion’s 2004 solo project, Live and Learn, the duo began work in the sweltering heat of an attic-based studio for what would eventually become the 14-track self-titled Common Market LP, released in October 2005. An advance copy caught the ear of KRS-One, who praised the album and RA Scion for “spitting in the Tradition of the conscious Hiphop movement.” The Blastmaster then flew up to rock Common Market’s album release party in Seattle, then taking the duo on the road with him on the Temple of Hip-hop tour. In the brief time since Common Market dropped their extraordinary debut album, the duo has gathered praise as Seattle Weekly’s 2006 Best New Artist and performing slots on grand stages such as Sasquatch Festival and The Capitol Hill Block Party. ... more...

Blue Scholars, Greenlaw, Pocket Kings at Capital Ballroom

Friday, February 8th, 2008 @ Sugar Nightclub Victoria is in for one of the biggest hip hop shows of 2008 when BLUE SCHOLARS come to the Island as a part of their first ever mini Canadian tour! They will be joined by Victoria favourites: GREENLAW AVE. & THE POCKET KINGS. Musically, the BLUE SCHOLARS come to entertain with exceptional writing and beats. While both members of the group are influenced by well known hip hop groups such as Tribe, Public Enemy, and Digable Planets there is so much more to be heard in their music. Sabzi and Geologic’s tastes range from anything danceable (with emphasis on jazz, funk, Latin, and soul) Artists like Thelonius Monk, Marvin Gaye to other contemporary Latin/hip hop artists such as Ozomati are present in the melodies and beats that accompany Geologic’s rhymes. Sabzi pushes the bounds with creating beats with an open mind to his music sources, unrestricting boundaries combined with a willingness to collaborate with almost anyone. Funk, Jazz, Hip Hop & Reggae all in one! The Concept of Dirty Bottom is to represent the Low-end theory and rootical ridims of the southern hemisphere. They called upon Vancouvers rhyhtmic wizard and long time OldSOFA Allstar Brennan 'ahh you guys' Saul to hit the traps for a week of off the floor sessions at Eastvans' lengendary Profile Studios. The trio recorded the beds live from March 7-10 2006, all overdubs and additional sessions were recorded at OldSOFA and Topspin studios in Vancouver. The vibe of the album, King Tubby meets Blue Note at an East Vancouver BBQ with celebrity chef James Brown. Late one Thursday night....I mean real late... The Doc on trumpet and Corduroy on harmonica started riffin' over play back thru the talkback mic. This created a template for a call and response playfulness that embodies the whole album. All the background vocals were captured on one mic, one take hard panned Motown/I-Threes style by the Dirty Bottom choir. Coming from both geographical and musically divergent backgrounds Langston Bella Coola"Reggae", Brennan Vancouver "Jazz", and Shawn Toronto "Soul" meant that these cats had a wide pallet for musical guests. Canada's Afro-Beat Jazz/Funk Juggernauts!
Thu. July 27th 2006 9:30pm - 1am doors at 9pm
Mr. Something Something, Corwin Fox at Central Bar & Grill

This is going to be an awesome show! If you dig Anti Balas Afro Beat Orchestra you're going to dig this band hands down. The music of Mr. Something Something ranges from afro-beat to jazz to funk and much more. The tunes are both energetic but chill at the same time - great for dancing or listening.

Western instruments and concepts of improvisation are explored and layered over what used to be called afrobeat; but the term strains to contain the innovations happening in the rhythm section at every show. It also fails to express in fiery-enough terms the contributions of notable and electrifying vocalist/performance artist Johan Hultqvist. Breaks and basslines are designed to induce and sustain a state of ecstatic dancing. The horn section strikes with power and uplifts with melody. And above it all, acting as a lightning rod for the combined energies of a Mr. Something Something event, is the lyric statement of the case for change and consciousness. And dance.

Tickets will be $9 advance @ Lyle's Place and Central Bar & Grill

MIKEY DREAD, Verse at Central Bar & Grill

Michael Campbell, a.k.a. Mikey Dread is one of the most influential performers and innovators in reggae music. His abilities, technical expertise, and unique vocal delivery combine to create a unique sound that tells the listener emphatically that it is the "Dread at the Controls." Perhaps Mikey's work with The Clash has garnered him with the most recognition, but his credentials and resume started long before his eye-opening production on several releases with the renowned Punk Stars from London. His work and interaction with The Clash was a significant event in the integration of reggae into popular music throughout the world. The album, "Black Market Clash", is a brilliant fusion of late 1970's punk rock and a heavy reggae bass and drum line. The reggae aspect of The Clash's album distinguished their sound from the other punks that emerged in the 1970's. Soon thereafter, it was a must for just about every punk band to have a reggae cover song on their album. Mikey was the first Producer ever to produce a UK chart hit for The Clash" Bank Robber" and later produced several reggae cuts on their internationally recognized Album "Sandinista." If you don't know Mikey Dread, there is a lot of read and listen on his web site. He is one of the most influential reggae artists in th... more...
