Massline Media's Common Market Confirmed for the First Time in Victoria BC!
Fri. October 10th 2008 10:30pm - 2am doors at 10pm
Common Market, Pocket Kings, CFC, DJ SPEEDY SHOES at Lucky Bar

Massline Media's COMMON MARKET are one of the best kept secrets in the Northwest... They are without a doubt one of the most conscious and entertaining underground hip hop groups to hit the Island in some time. They came together in 2005 (Sabzi and RA Scion) from similar backgrounds in their spiritual approach to their music. Sabzi is one-half of the groundbreaking Blue Scholars (who are opening for Hieroglyhpics later this month) and Scion was a well-travelled solo emcee. After collaborating on a couple tracks on RA Scion’s 2004 solo project, Live and Learn, the duo began work in the sweltering heat of an attic-based studio for what would eventually become the 14-track self-titled Common Market LP, released in October 2005. An advance copy caught the ear of KRS-One, who praised the album and RA Scion for “spitting in the Tradition of the conscious Hiphop movement.” The Blastmaster then flew up to rock Common Market’s album release party in Seattle, then taking the duo on the road with him on the Temple of Hip-hop tour. In the brief time since Common Market dropped their extraordinary debut album, the duo has gathered praise as Seattle Weekly’s 2006 Best New Artist and performing slots on grand stages such as Sasquatch Festival and The Capitol Hill Block Party. ... more...

Blue Scholars, Greenlaw, Pocket Kings at Capital Ballroom

Friday, February 8th, 2008 @ Sugar Nightclub Victoria is in for one of the biggest hip hop shows of 2008 when BLUE SCHOLARS come to the Island as a part of their first ever mini Canadian tour! They will be joined by Victoria favourites: GREENLAW AVE. & THE POCKET KINGS. Musically, the BLUE SCHOLARS come to entertain with exceptional writing and beats. While both members of the group are influenced by well known hip hop groups such as Tribe, Public Enemy, and Digable Planets there is so much more to be heard in their music. Sabzi and Geologic’s tastes range from anything danceable (with emphasis on jazz, funk, Latin, and soul) Artists like Thelonius Monk, Marvin Gaye to other contemporary Latin/hip hop artists such as Ozomati are present in the melodies and beats that accompany Geologic’s rhymes. Sabzi pushes the bounds with creating beats with an open mind to his music sources, unrestricting boundaries combined with a willingness to collaborate with almost anyone. As a former jazz pianist that attended tons of ska and punk shows he creates thick sweet-sounding beats that can be listened to in a quiet setting or thumped nice and loudly at a party or in the club. Blue Scholars is as much rooted in the music as it is in working in the community. Their experiences as colleg... more...
DIRTY BOTTOM CD RELEASE!
Fri. February 1st 2008 9pm
Dirty Bottom, Get Some at Lucky Bar

Funk, Jazz, Hip Hop & Reggae all in one! The Concept of Dirty Bottom is to represent the Low-end theory and rootical ridims of the southern hemisphere. They called upon Vancouvers rhyhtmic wizard and long time OldSOFA Allstar Brennan 'ahh you guys' Saul to hit the traps for a week of off the floor sessions at Eastvans' lengendary Profile Studios. The trio recorded the beds live from March 7-10 2006, all overdubs and additional sessions were recorded at OldSOFA and Topspin studios in Vancouver. The vibe of the album, King Tubby meets Blue Note at an East Vancouver BBQ with celebrity chef James Brown. Late one Thursday night....I mean real late... The Doc on trumpet and Corduroy on harmonica started riffin' over play back thru the talkback mic. This created a template for a call and response playfulness that embodies the whole album. All the background vocals were captured on one mic, one take hard panned Motown/I-Threes style by the Dirty Bottom choir. Coming from both geographical and musically divergent backgrounds Langston Bella Coola"Reggae", Brennan Vancouver "Jazz", and Shawn Toronto "Soul" meant that these cats had a wide pallet for musical guests. These artists included Kilo Cee on the Decks, Serwan Yamolky on the oud, Chad MaKela on baritone sax, and Edan Armstrong on percussion. Singers ranged from the Animated antics of Mike Ackhurst, suggestive themes of Bianca Carli, and collaborative poetry of Laura Crema and Kateri Akiwenzie-Damm.

They will be joined by one of Victoria's favourite party hip hop groups from Saltspring Island - GET SOME w/ the Island's Hip Hop DJ King - Degree One!

Tickets on sale now at Lyle's Place, Comnplex, Jamaican Jerkhouse & TICKETWEB.COM.

The main song people learned to dance to was "Signal di Plane" which has dances such as Signal di Plane, Chaplin Step and the Parachute. Check http://youtube.com/watch?v=lgcnBOGm984 This phenomenon was similar to the 1960s in Jamaica in the dancehalls where everyone learned to do "the ska" which also had various dances to go along with it. Check out this link: http://youtube.com/watch?v=TAL1VTfffOo Point is history repeats itself and Elephant Man through his album release and music videos began a new trend to bring fresh dances to the forefront into dancehalls throughout Jamaica and around the world. ----------------------------------- Elephant Man stormed through the doors of dancehall back in 1998 under t... more...
